ABOUT US

Turning Interest Into Action

Passtown ("Pass") Elementary School was built in 1923, as a two-room schoolhouse specifically for "Colored" students. This new school replaced the one-room colored schoolhouse across the road that was built in 1914, which had become overcrowded due to a growing population of African Americans migrating from the South.

Generations of families attended Pass School and were taught by the same nurturing teachers, Mr. Cuff, Miss Spann, Miss Washington, Miss Clary/Mrs. Moore, Miss Mason, Mr. Clark and others.

Passtown school is located in the historic community of Hayti, in Valley Township, Coatesville, Pennsylvania.

Passtown School was integrated in 1957.

For over 30 years, the former school building has served as the Valley Township Municipal Building. The township is moving its offices to a newly built municipal building.

The community has expressed its desire to repurpose the building as its Community Center and Museum. The township has expressed its desire to demolish the former school building.
